(L) Bridge on Interstate I-155 maintained by the Illinois Dept. of Transportation (IDOT)

(R) Repairs are mandated to the existing expansion joints as part of ongoing bridge preservation work.

(L) Example of common condition in roadways to damaged EPDM anchor-block "bolt-down" expansion joints installed in concrete surface blockouts.

(R) Existing Bolt-Downs have been removed, the blockouts have been re-cut or chipped clean, leaving well-defined blockouts and cleared expansion gaps.
7:30 AM

(L) Temporary center retaining forms are placed in the expansion gap to contain the flow of EMCRETE nosing material which will be poured in the blockouts.

(R) Blockouts receive final shop-vac for removal of loose particles and debris.

8:15 AM

(L) Blockouts are brush-primed with EMSEAL's EMPRIME primer.

(R) IDOT crew assembles EMCRETE nosing materials prior to mixing and installation.

EMCRETE Nosing Material is mixed in two consecutive stages.

(L) 1.  Parts A & B EMCRETE are mixed together.

(R) 2. Sand/Fiber is added to A/B mixture complete EMCRETE material.

8:30 AM

(L) EMCRETE is poured into blockout.

(R) Self-leveling EMCRETE nosing material quickly hardens to create a new impact-absorbing substrate.

Center forms are then removed exposing expansion gap.

12:30 PM

(L) After epoxy has been applied to the substrate walls, BEJS Expansion Joint sticks are placed into the expansion gap.

(R) BEJS sticks are joined together and then pushed down into gap.
(L) Silicone corner bead is injected between BEJS stick and substrate to complete the seal.
