HBD Construction was in search of an
expansion joint system to accommodate the seismic opening between a new
elevator tower and and the existing building that houses the Provision
Living Center for the aged in St. Louis. After a visit to EMSEAL's
website HBD looked to the Seismic Colorseal as a possible candidate and
was linked to Shield
Systems, the local rep firm for technical assistance.
A visit to the jobsite by a Shield sales consultant confirmed the
SEISMIC COLORSEAL to be a perfect match for the application. The
product could accommodate the variation in the masonry to masonry joint
opening as it is manufactured in 1/4" increments for such challenges.
In addition, the joint opening made a change in plane and continued over
the top of the tower and down the back side of the elevator structure.
Again, the
SEISMIC COLORSEAL could be installed to provide
continuity of
seal in the joint from start to finish.
The average opening was approximately 4 1/2" and was installed quickly
by two carpenters never before experienced in EMSEAL precompressed foam
sealants. A testimony for the simplicity of the product and user
friendliness of the product.
The installation starts with removal of the factory wrapping which holds
the foam in compression. A release film is removed from the edges of the
foam to exposed a mounting adhesive on one face and the material is
slipped into the joint.
Shortly after insertion the material swells and forms a permanent seal
due to a combination of the acrylic impregnation and the back pressure
caused after expansion. Following the expansion process a bead of
matching silicone sealant is added to the joint interface to form the
final seal.
HBD was amazed at the ease of application and pleased with the aesthetic
finish of the
non-invasive
watertight joint. Another satisified customer, another successful
application for
SEISMIC COLORSEAL.
